Academic Plans

Effective Fall 2019, those wishing to declare a major in Health and Kinesiology can select from the following program emphases: (Academic Completion Plan)

Bachelor's in Science

Our innovative curriculum combines health and kinesiology fundamentals along with a signature experience in community based physical activity, fitness and wellness, and/or research. The degree programs are ideal for students who are interested in pursuing careers in areas such as corporate fitness, physical education, community health education, cardiac rehabilitation, and strength and conditioning.

What can I do with a degree in Health & Kinesiology?

This degree also serves as outstanding preparation for graduate education, including MS and PhD programs, in physical therapy, medicine and physician assistant programs, occupational therapy, public health, and a variety of other programs that train health professionals.

Health & Kinesiology also offers 3 minors.

Other KINES Degree Options for Previously Declared Students

Students who have declared their major in Kinesiology prior to Fall 2019 may continue to follow the majors outlined below or they can choose to follow one of the new available emphases.  Please contact the Kinesiology Academic Advisors for more information. 

Kinesiology (BS) with emphases in:

-Exercise Science

This option is only available to students who have declared their major and taken courses prior to Fall 2019. 

This option is a non-vocational program specific to those students who plan on attending a professional graduate program after their undergraduate degree. This option is dedicated to helping students better understand the disciplines within KINES, including pedagogy, kinesiology, exercise physiology, and exercise psychology.

-Fitness and Wellness Specialist Focus Area

This option is only available to students who have declared their major and taken courses prior to Fall 2019. 

The Fitness and Wellness Specialist focus area is a vocational program that is committed to preparing students to enter the fitness, health and wellness fields. Students will be able to help optimize fitness and wellness experiences for children and adults, administer safe and effective fitness programs, adapt and modify physical activity for individuals with special needs and promote physical activity in the community.

Kinesiology Teaching (BS)

This option is only available to students who have declared their major and taken courses prior to Fall 2019. 

The Kinesiology Teaching program at the University of Utah is committed to the development of quality physical education teachers through the integration of theory and practice in a wide range of experiences and settings. Through intensive academic coursework and field experience, combined with continuous student reflection, the goal of the program is to provide individuals who believe ALL students can learn and deserve the opportunity to learn; who act on the principle that diversity is to be valued; and who are committed to providing quality physical education instruction. The Kinesiology Teaching curriculum is designed to help students meet the state requirements for teacher certification. Students must have and maintain a 2.7 GPA to declare the teaching program.
