Scholarships

The Health & Kinesiology Department offers several funding opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Each scholarship or tuition waiver has specific criteria that must be met in order for a student to be eligible to apply. Please see the information below about the different funding opportunities available in Health & Kinesiology.

Undergraduate Scholarships

Kinesiology

IZETTA N. BENNION MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was initiated by Glenn N. Taylor, Ph.D. in honor of his aunt, Izetta N. Bennion. Ms. Bennion taught public school physical education and supervised many student teachers. As a tribute to his aunt, Dr. Taylor established this scholarship for the benefit of a Kinesiology Teaching student.

In addition to the priority consideration given to female physical education students teachers, the following criteria will be considered in the selection of the successful candidates.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Be a current Kinesiology major.
  • Demonstrate academic excellence.
  • Demonstrate commitment to teaching physical education.
  • Indicate need for financial assistance.
  • Obtain at least one reference letter from a Kinesiology Teaching faculty member.
  • Priority will be given to senior-level female students, though all students are encouraged to apply.

 

GORDON AND BETTY BROWNING SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was initiated by Gordon and Betty Browning towards students majoring within the Health Sciences at the University of Utah. The scholarship was established for deserving students who have excelled academically and who are in need of financial assistance. The following criteria will be considered most important in the selection of the successful candidates.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Be a current Kinesiology major.
  • Demonstrate academic excellence.
  • Indicate need for financial assistance.
  • Preference is given to graduate students, though undergraduate students are encouraged to apply.

 

EDWARD J. AND MARGARET EISENMAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Dr. Patricia Eisenman initiated this scholarship fund in memory of her parents. Throughout their lives they supported the educational efforts of many and this scholarship is Dr. Eisenman's contribution to their legacy of giving. The wish of Dr. Eisenman is to have the scholarship that bears her parents' name, provide support for deserving students who are in need of financial assistance and have demonstrated commitment to becoming a Kinesiology professional.

Priority consideration will be given to minority students and/or first generation college students. The following criteria will be considered most important in the selection of the successful candidates.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Be a current Health & Kinesiology major with a Kinesiology emphasis of junior, or senior status - completed a minimum of 60 semester hours.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00.
  • Demonstrate commitment to an active lifestyle.
  • Demonstrate commitment to being a practicing Kinesiology professional.
  • Indicate need for financial assistance.

 

MARVIN G. AND BARBARA HESS SCHOLARSHIP

An endowed scholarship honoring Marvin G. Hess was established on his retirement from the College of Health in 1996. The scholarship was funded by contribution from Mr. Hess, his colleagues, and former students and wrestlers. Mr. Hess has indicated that he would like the recipient to be an undergraduate student who plans to pursue teaching and coaching.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Be a current Health & Kinesiology major with an emphasis in Kinesiology or Physical Education Teaching.
  • Plan on pursuing teaching and coaching professionally.
  • Indicate need for financial assistance.

 

JANET THURGOOD SCHOLARSHIP

Ms. Thurgood was a longtime faculty member in Health & Kinesiology. She was a beloved teacher and mentor. The wish of Ms. Thurgood is to have the scholarship that bears her name reflect her professional and personal values. The following criteria will be considered most important in the selection of the successful candidates:

Applicant Requirements:

  • Be a current Kinesiology student.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to teaching physical education.
  • Demonstrate a zest for life and skill for sport.
  • Demonstrate academic excellence.
  • Indicate need for financial assistance.

 

BARBARA HILLMAN WEST SCHOLARSHIP

The wish of Dr. West is to have the scholarship that bears her name reflect her professional and personal values.  The following criteria will be considered most important in the selection of the successful candidates for this scholarship.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Be a current Health & Kinesiology major with an emphasis in Kinesiology or Physical Education Teaching.
  • Demonstrate academic excellence.
  • Demonstrate commitment to a career in the field of Kinesiology.
  • Desire to be of service to society and the profession.
  • Indicate need for financial assistance.

 

TUITION WAIVER

This scholarship is offered to entering freshmen, continuing and transfer students who have excelled in academics. The tuition waiver is for one year (two full-time semesters). Students who have received the award before are eligible to re-apply.

Applicant Requirements:

  • Be a Utah resident.
  • Be admitted as a matriculated (degree-seeking) student.
  • Be a continuing student who has declared a major in Health & Kinesiology with an emphasis in Kinesiology or Physical Education Teaching.
  • Have at least a 3.5 GPA

 

How to Apply

To apply for an Kinesiology Scholarship or Departmental Tuition Waiver you must:

  1. Complete and submit an application at scholarships.utah.edu. Search "Kinesiology Undergraduate General Scholarship Application." Within this application you can select which of the above scholarships you want to be considered for. Make sure to select all the scholarships you want to apply for when you fill out this application.  It should only be submitted once. The application is currently being updated and will be viewable and available to submit starting February 1st.
  2. Two Letters of Recommendation are required: The 1st must be from any higher education faculty member who can address and/or assess your academic abilities. The 2nd must be from any higher education faculty member or school/work/volunteer supervisor who can speak to your aptitude and character. These are submitted through the Recommendation Form (completed by faculty and/or supervisor). No additional letter of recommendation is required.  The recommendation form is a part of the scholarship application found at scholarships.utah.edu. You will be asked to provide the name and email address of your recommenders and an email will be sent to them with directions. 

Applications are due every year before midnight on March 1st. Awards are for the school year, beginning in the fall of the same year as the submitted application.

 

Health

JOSEPH S. AND MARJORIE A. JONES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP 

This health education scholarship shall only be awarded to deserving students and shall be based primarily on scholarly performance.

BETTY AND GORDON BROWNING SCHOLARSHIP 

Awarded to deserving students who have excelled academically and who are in need of financial assistance. This scholarship may be awarded to undergraduate students, but preference shall be given to those students in the graduate fields.

DONAL B. HUTCHISON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Awarded to an outstanding student who has been accepted to study health based on outstanding academic achievement and financial need.

KENT FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP

This Health promotion and education scholarship shall only be awarded to deserving students who are in need of financial assistance and who have excelled academically.

JACK LUNT ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

This health promotion and education scholarship shall only be awarded to deserving students and shall be based primarily on scholarly performance, financial need, and service within the field of health.

PATRICIA A. REAGAN ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

This health promotion and education scholarship shall only be awarded to deserving students who are in need of financial assistance. Priority of awarding said scholarship shall be to those individuals who are sensitive to and promote the concept of diversity.

KARL SCHLECKMAN SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship shall only be awarded to deserving students who are in the Emergency Medical Services emphasis.

TUITION WAIVER

  • Student must enroll in a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester with a maximum of 18 credit hours.
  • Minimum GPA requirement is 3.5.
  • Scholarship not renewable.

Graduate Scholarships

The Health & Kinesiology Program offers 3 graduate scholarships: 

  • GORDON & BETTY BROWNING SCHOLARSHIP 
    ROBERT O. RUHLING MASTERS SCHOLARSHIP 
    N. P. NEILSON GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP

  • Applicant Requirements: 

The purpose of these scholarships is to aid a deserving graduate student in continuing his or her pursuit of academic excellence. In order to be eligible, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  1. 1. The applicant must be a student in Health & Kinesiology, enrolled in part or all of the academic year during which this scholarship is awarded
  2. 2. The applicant must have demonstrated academic excellence. The following indices may be used to demonstrate such excellence:
  • -Cumulative G.P .A.
  • -Papers presented at international, national, district or state professional meetings
  • -Articles in submission, grants written but not funded, papers not accepted for presentation etc.
  • -Grants written (indicate whether the grant was funded and the amount)
  • -Published articles in refereed journals
  • -Professional service to Health & Kinesiology

Applicants will be judged on their academic excellence and their service records as listed in their annual reports.

How to Apply: 

To apply for these scholarships go to scholarships.utah.edu and search "Kinesiology Graduate General Scholarship Application."  The Kinesiology Graduate General Scholarship Application allows students to apply for all departmental scholarships in one place. Within this application you will have the opportunity to select which scholarships you would like to apply for. The application will be veiwable on the site starting February 1st.  Applications are due before midnight on March 1st.

 

ALICE OAKES BRONSON RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The Department of Health & Kinesiology invites applicants for the Alice Oakes Bronson Research Fellowship. This fellowship was made possible by a generous endowment from Alice Oakes Bronson. Ms. Oakes was a former faculty member and Chair of the Department of Physical Education. Her career was dedicated to the preparation of physical education teachers. Through her generous endowment future exercise and sport scientists will continue to promote the benefits of an active lifestyle.

The purpose of this fellowship is to reward a third or fourth year doctoral student who has been meritorious in their graduate career but needs to focus on the completion of their doctoral dissertation.

 

  • Applicant Requirements: 

  • -Successfully complete all phases of their qualifying examinations
  • -Submit a signed IRB or Animal Care and Use Committee protocol and a signed (by the supervisory committee) proposal prior to the beginning of the academic year for which award will be made
  • -Be a third or fourth year candidate for the doctoral degree

Applicants will be judged on the quality and rigor of their research, excellence in teaching and service records as listed in their annual reports. Additionally, applicants who have exhibited highest professional standards in serving the department are encouraged to apply. Thus, students who have volunteered to assist their fellow students, faculty, and staff in meeting the mission of the Department of Health & Kinesiology would meet this criterion. In part, criterion will be judged by the applicant’s attendance at departmental meetings, Graduate Council meetings, willingness to volunteer for projects, and presence in clinical and laboratory settings within the department.
