This emphasis area has a range of options for students to choose from, given the wide range of professional possibilities. These include areas in sustainable tourism management, hospitality management, tourism marketing and enterprise, and adventure and nature-based tourism.

The study of tourism and hospitality generally, comprises an enormous breadth of fascinating topics. Among the many topics that are of concern to tourism and hospitality students are cultural and ethical implications of tourism, tourism policy, biodiversity and cultural heritage conservation, destination infrastructure and analysis, visitor management, customer service, meetings and event management, tourism economics, and destination marketing. This emphasis is designed to provide students with the theoretical knowledge, operational expertise, and technical skills to be successful contributors to this diverse and exciting field.

Curriculum

Courses in this emphasis area cover major aspects of tourism and hospitality, including sustainable tourism product design, business operations, certification and guidelines for sustainable tourism, nature-based tourism management, marketing, accounting, resort management, food and beverage, convention management, hospitality law, and accommodation management.

Graduates with an emphasis in ST&HM are empowered to work effectively in management, marketing, and research in a myriad of governmental agencies and private businesses that collectively comprise the tourism industry. Certificate Opportunities for Students in ST&HM

Hospitality Operations Certificate Program

The 8-course Hospitality Operations Certificate is offered through the American Hotel and Lodging Association. These courses are available to students in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, as electives for students within another major at the University of Utah, or as non-credit courses for individuals who would like to take them for career development and certification.

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive the internationally recognized Hospitality Operations Certificate awarded by the American Hotel and Lodging Association. Successful completion of each individual course will also earn the student a Certificate of Completion from the American Hotel and Lodging Association.
