Petitions Introduction
Petitions are complex to understand, so we recommend reading the petition types to get a basic understanding and then meet with an academic advisor.
- Contact your academic advisor to discuss which petition serves what you hope to accomplish.
- If you have general questions on petitions, contact Lorraine Brown
- Please refer to the student handbook regarding all University of Utah policies.

-
A college student may apply for a current term petition to withdraw from a course(s) past the original withdrawal deadline each semester. Please review the academic calendar to find the last day of classes for a semester.
-
A college student can petition for their transfer credits to count for general education and/or bachelor’s degree requirements by formal review. A formal review is a student requesting to have their course(s) reviewed for course equivalency or to meet general education and/or bachelor’s degree requirements not yet fulfilled.
-
A college student can petition for their transfer credits to count for major-specific requirements by formal review. A formal review is a student requesting to have their transfer course(s) reviewed for course equivalency.
-
A withdrawal petition is considered past term once the affected semester has ended, which is concluded by the last day of classes. Please review the academic calendar to find the official last day of classes for a semester.
-
Please review the major petition website for more instructions on submitting a major petition or connect with your academic advisor, as major/departmental/exceptions to policy petitions vary, and their petition processes can change over time.
-
The petitions guide will cover only the most common petitions that students consider within the College of Health and their basic information. This document should NOT replace speaking with an advisor about your situation.
