Speech and Hearing Science Major

Admission & Requirements

  • Students who have enrolled in CSD 1010 (Introduction to Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology) or who have completed a CSD course at another university and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 are eligible to declare a major in Speech and Hearing Science.
  • Course work specific to the major may be initiated during the freshman year or any subsequent year. Typically, most of the courses in the major will be taken during the student's junior and senior years.
  • A student must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA average in CSD courses to remain in the program. Undergraduate students who fall below the required GPA averages (2.5 overall and 3.0 in the major) will be notified in writing and placed on conditional status for one semester. If, after being placed on conditional status, the student fails to raise his or her GPA to the acceptable level, notification will be sent that he or she is being dropped from the program.

    Required Allied Courses

    Undergraduate majors in Communication Sciences and Disorders are required to complete at least 9 hours in allied subjects. Three allied credit hours from each of the following areas are required to comply with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's (ASHA) standards for certification:

    • 3 credit hours of a biological science (e.g., biology, general anatomy & physiology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, genetics, etc.)
    • 3 credit hours of a physical science (e.g., physics, chemistry, etc.)
    • 3 credit hours of social or behavioral science (e.g., psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology, etc.)

    Allied courses may also be used to fulfill university general education requirements.

    • STATISTICS COURSE (e.g., FCS 3210 Statistics for Family and Consumer Studies (4), PSY 3000 Statistical Methods Psychology (4), or SOC 3112 Social Statistics (4)) (QI)

    Clinical Observation Hours

    Student must also complete 25 clock-hours of observation of speech, language, and/or hearing treatment before graduation.

    Transfer Students

    Many courses from other universities may be used to fulfill the Allied Course Requirement. Please meet with the Departmental Advisor to determine which courses transfer.
