How does a degree in EMS help me?
EMS is more and more requiring degrees for promotions and hiring. Our degree will provide you with a well rounded approach to EMS that goes beyond certification courses. We focus on a global, in-depth, approach to patient care and agency management.

What kind of first aid and CPR classes do you offer?

Once a month there is an American Heart Association (AHA) Heartcode BLS Provider level CPR skills session. This skills session is connected to the online Heartcode BLS provider course the AHA offers. What is a Heartcode BLS provider skills session?
The Heartcode BLS provider skills sessions is the skills component of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) online Heartcode BLS provider course. This course is a mixed class where all the lecture is done online at your convenience. Once the online portion has been successfully completed, students must schedule to attend a skills session to complete certification. How much does it cost to get CPR certified?

How do I renew my first aid certification?
First aid challenge courses or renewals are NOT offered. The H EDU 2000, First Aid and CPR course is an option for certification.
How do I recertify/renew my CPR certification?
To recertify or renew your CPR certification, you must retake the class. The Heartcode BLS Provider skills session in conjunction with the American Heart Association’s Heartcode BLS provider online course is available.

What is an EMT?
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is the entry level to emergency medical service and may work in a variety of urban and rural settings. This EMT course focuses specifically on preparing students to work on an ambulance. EMT certification is required prior to attending Paramedic school. For more information on EMT classes click here,

All of our EMT classes are open to the public. You do not need to be a degree-seeking student at the University of Utah to take the class. EMT courses are 120 – 160 hours in length.

What is an AEMT?
Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) will learn pathophysiology and anatomy associated with injuries and illnesses along with advanced skills including IV medication administration, injections, and advanced airway management. Eligibility for enrollment requires the completion of an EMT course.

When does the AEMT class meet?

Can I take the EMT class if I am not a student?

How do I recertify my EMT or AEMT?
The state of Utah utilizes the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) requirements for recertification of EMTs, AEMTs and paramedics. Certifications are valid for 2 years. Beginning in 2020, we will be offering an all-inclusive recertification service. The EMS Recertification Program includes training officer services, all required continuing education, skills verification, etc. to individuals seeking a comprehensive solution to maintaining any level of EMS certification. What CPR certifications work for the EMT and AEMT course?

Paramedic FAQs
What is a Paramedic?
A paramedic is the highest certification level in emergency medical services. You must be certified as an EMT or AEMT to attend paramedic school. Paramedic school builds on the knowledge and experience from the previous levels of certification. A paramedic is able to administer several different medications beyond what an AEMT is able to. They are also able to perform more advanced skills including heart rhythm identification. Paramedic courses are 1200 – 1800 hours in length.
Most paramedic programs require pre-requisites. These are university level courses in Math, Writing, Medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
The university of Utah does not offer a paramedic course. We have an academic affiliation with Weber State University. Students who have been accepted into the EMS degree are able to attend the Weber State program.

I want to be a paramedic. Where should I start?
To become a paramedic, you must first become an EMT. You can then choose to go through the an AEMT course or Paramedic school. Gaining experience as an EMT and/or an AEMT prior to paramedic school is beneficial.
How much does the EMT and AEMT courses at the University of Utah cost?
The cost varies depending on how you are registered. If you are enrolled as a student at the University of Utah the tuition cost is for 9 credit hours for the EMT and 6 for the AEMT. Tuition costs can be found here: https://fbs.admin.utah.edu/income/.
If you are a community student taking the course for no credit, the cost can be found here: https://continue.utah.edu/noncredit/health
Textbook, application, and testing fees are not included in tuition.
Is the paramedic course offered on the University of Utah campus?
The University of Utah does not offer a paramedic course. Instead we have an academic affiliation with Weber State University. Students who have been accepted into the EMS degree are able to attend the Weber State program.
