Clinical Outcomes of Orthopaedic Research (COOR) Program
The COOR program is a voluntary research study that aims to test patient function following common joint injuries and orthopedic surgeries. The goal of this program is to provide your Utah Health medical team with a personalized report of how you are doing. From this test, you and your medical team can further discuss your treatment plan.
A referral from your University of Utah Orthopedic provider is needed prior to scheduling an assessment.
Program Questions
No. Participation in this program is completely voluntary and free for all participants. The study will cover parking expenses for the assessment visit. The participant is responsible for travel to and from the assessment.
Measures from the assessment are collected and compiled in order to increase medical knowledge of your injury and how it influences patient outcomes. ALL DATA FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES ARE DEIDENTIFIED. The only form that will have your name on it is the Functional COOR Report that is only given to you and your medical team.
Your surgical treatment from the University of Utah Health will not change or be influenced by your participation in the current research study. Your surgeon may recommend additional treatments, such as physical therapy, if your test identifies functional deficits in some areas.
Example: If the strength tests from the COOR program demonstrate weak muscle strength, your surgeon may recommend additional rehabilitation to improve strength prior to going back to sport activities. All recommendations provided from your surgeon are in your best interest and will be made following conversations between you (the patient) and your surgeon.
The assessment will take between 60-90 minutes. Your surgeon may recommend you complete this assessment more than once depending on your results or your injury.
You and your surgeon will receive an individualized report of how you are doing. This will allow you and your health provider to discuss an individualized treatment plan for you.
All assessments will be similar to exercises that you have performed with your athletic trainer or physical therapist. If you have not performed similar tests or do not feel comfortable with performing them, they will not be completed. You may experience slight muscle soreness following the completion of the test similar to a hard work-out.
