Health Internship Options

In the Health & Kinesiology Department, we offer two internship courses, KINES 4810 and H EDU 5990, which allow students to get hands-on experience in the field.

KINES 4810

Course Description

The purpose of the Kinesiology Internship is to advance and enhance students' community engagement and professional growth through integration of classroom theory with planned, supervised, practical, and meaningful work experience in the field of kinesiology. In this Community Engaged Learning (CEL) designated course, students will gain a deeper understanding of the real challenges and rewards of practicing in a community setting. Each student will work with a community partner to create and accomplish individual goals that will address their organization’s needs. As they actively engage in the community, students will gain a deeper understanding about how to integrate key concepts from the kinesiology curriculum in a real-world setting. Students will reflect on how their understanding of the community and the need they are working to address has evolved through their CEL experience. Additionally, students will improve career readiness by creating a professional online presence, practicing interview skills, meeting with a career counselor, and networking. Students must receive prior approval from the Internship Coordinator, Traci Thompson, before beginning their internship. The Internship policy and procedures for this course are outlined on the Canvas course page. Students can gain access to this page by contacting Traci Thompson.

H EDU 5990, 5991, 5992

Course Description

The purpose of the Internship/Preceptorship is to advance and enhance students' professional growth through integration of classroom theory with planned, supervised, and practical work experience. H EDU 5990 is for Community Health Education students, H EDU 5991 is for EMS students, and H EDU 5992 is for OSH students. These courses are designed to be a partnership between the student, their sponsor for the internship, and the Health & Kinesiology Program. Through participation in an internship, students learn to bridge the gap between theory of classroom work and practical application by performing meaningful work related to career interests, utilizing faculty counseling, receiving sponsor supervision and training, and accessing the possibilities of permanent employment. The internship experience will help students learn more about themselves, which may include both positive and challenging growth experiences. The Internship policy and procedures for this course are outlined on the Canvas course page. Students can gain access to this page by contacting Traci Thompson.
