Major petitions, also known as departmental petitions or exceptions to policy, are used to determine if transfer courses qualify for course substitution to complete specific core major courses. Each major has its own petition or similar process.
The petition guide will cover only the most common petitions that students consider within the College of Health and their basic information. This document should NOT replace speaking with an advisor about your situation.
Petition Instructions
Please review the petition instructions for your major. If you are uncertain about how to proceed with a major petition, don't hesitate to contact your academic advisor for guidance.
Please meet with CHPE's academic advisor to receive instructions on how to submit a CHPE major petition
Please meet with EMS's academic advisor to receive instructions on how to submit a EMS major petition
Step 1 - Start your Email
- Start an email from your University UMail account and add the following recipients:
- Kerry.Magiske@hsc.utah.edu
- Your major advisor’s email (cc'd)
Step 2 - Attach supporting documentation
- Attach the course syllabus(es) to the email as a PDF file
Step 3 - Use the email template and send in your petition
Provide all of the following information in the body of the email (in one or two paragraphs) and send:
- Full Name
- UID Number
- Major
- Major Advisor’s Name
- Requirement or Course Equivalent you are petitioning for in a few sentences
- Transfer Course, number, & total amount of credits
- College/University where the course was taken
