Who can volunteer?
Volunteering at Midvale CBC Community Clinic Physical Therapy as a student care provider is a privilege open to ALL students currently enrolled in the University of Utah Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) program.
- 1st year DPT students may volunteer their first summer semester as clinic Floaters: see Other Volunteer Opportunities section below for details. They may volunteer to treat patients partway through the fall semester.
- 2nd year DPT students may volunteer in Summer, Fall, or Spring semesters
- 3rd year DPT students may volunteer in Summer and Fall semesters only
What does a typical volunteer shift entail?
Student volunteers provide care in teams of 2 (one "senior” student & one "junior" student) under the supervision of a licensed "attending" physical therapist from the greater Salt Lake area. Each student team sees 2-3 patients per shift and is responsible for completing all aspects of care including examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, procedural/educational intervention, and documentation. How to sign up
Click on the Volunteer Spot button below to sign up or look for future openings. Reference the welcome message on the clinic's Volunteer Spot page for instructions on how to sign up to volunteer.
- Students are currently not limited in the number of shifts they may sign up for.
Next, prior to volunteering, students MUST read through the resources below to help familiarize students with the clinic's layout, policies, and procedures:

Then, complete the following student paperwork items:
- Training & Requirements Statement of Completion
- Confidentiality & Information Security Agreement
- Media-Photo Waiver
- Personal & Emergency Contact Information
Students should turn a hard copy of each item into the Floater on the day of their first shift.
On the Monday prior to each assigned shift: students will receive an email from the Student Liaisons containing the student team assignments & other information including:
- Information about the attending PT who will be supervising
- A summary of each team's basic patient information to review, if available (i.e. age, gender, chief complaint, primary language, initial evaluation vs. return visit)- PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PATIENT SCHEDULE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE DAY-OF!
If any questions or issues arise, please contact one of the Student Liaisons (firstname.lastname@example.org). Otherwise, take note of any things that worked well, things that need improvement, things you would change, etc. After completing each shift, students will have the opportunity to provide feedback via a brief online survey.

Students who have volunteered AT LEAST ONCE at the clinic may also sign up to be the clinic Floater for any given shift. Click here for job description.
Incoming students will also have the opportunity to run for a position on the clinic’s Student Board during the Fall semester of their first year in the program. Each year, 8 new board members will be elected via an open voting process amongst their first year classmates. For more information on the various board positions available, refer to the Student Training Manual.
