Who can volunteer?

Volunteering at Midvale CBC Community Clinic Physical Therapy and the Neuro Pro Bono Clinic as a student care provider is open to ALL students currently enrolled in the University of Utah Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. Student treater positions at the Maliheh Clinic are only open to second year DPT students.

  • 1st year DPT Students: may volunteer to treat patients in the Neuro Pro Bono Clinic in Fall and Spring semesters and at the Midvale CBC Clinic starting partway through the fall semester.
    • First year students will assist a team of second year students in the Neuro Pro Bono Clinic
  • 2nd year DPT Students: may volunteer in Summer, Fall, or Spring semesters
  • 3rd year DPT Students: may volunteer in Summer and Fall semesters only

What does a typical volunteer shift entail?

Student volunteers provide care in teams of 2 (one "senior” student & one "junior" student) under the supervision of a licensed "attending" physical therapist from the greater Salt Lake area. Each student team sees 2-3 patients per shift and is responsible for completing all aspects of care including examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, procedural/educational intervention, and documentation. For more information on clinic operations or student expectations/responsibilities, please refer to the Student Training Manual link below.

  • Information about the attending PT who will be supervising
  • A summary of each team's basic patient information to review, if available (i.e. age, gender, chief complaint, primary language, initial evaluation vs. return visit)- PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PATIENT SCHEDULE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE DAY-OF!
  • Documentation information specific to each clinic

If any questions or issues arise, please contact one of the Student Liaisons. Monetary (cash or check) and equipment donations can also be made at the main office of the Department of Physical Therapy, 520 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City, 84108 (located in Research Park). Checks should be made out to the Department of Physical Therapy, just write Pro-bono clinic in the memo line.

All donations are tax deductible and all funds will go directly to the clinic. Although we are currently unable to accept large pieces of equipment, we would greatly appreciate many smaller items and supplies (e.g., variety of tape, resistance bands, small free weights, medicine balls, foam rollers, ice packs, hand sanitizer, etc).
