PEAK Health and Fitness Community Health Internship
The PEAK Community Health Internship provides students with hands-on experience in community wellness, preventative health education, nutrition programming, and patient engagement. Designed for community health students, this internship partners with PEAK and the Osher Center for Integrative Health to give interns meaningful experience serving both the University of Utah and the larger community.
This internship helps students build professional communication skills, gain direct patient interaction experience, and better understand how community-based wellness programs improve public health outcomes.
Interns will develop skills in:
- Community health education and outreach
- Preventative health and wellness coaching
- Patient communication and engagement
- Nutrition education and food insecurity initiatives
- Health screening and biometric testing
- Event coordination and wellness promotion
- Cultural competency and working with interpreters
- Fitness instruction and wellness programming
Biometric Screening & Health Testing
Interns will receive training and hands-on experience conducting:
- Bod Pod assessments
- Resting metabolic rate testing
- Cholesterol, glucose, and A1C testing
Students will learn how to administer tests, interpret results, and communicate findings professionally and effectively to participants.
Food Pharmacy Initiative
Working with the University of Utah Health Food Pharmacy Program, interns will:
- Assist with intake forms and patient education
- Help distribute healthy food resources to community members
- Learn how nutrition impacts chronic disease prevention and management
- Gain experience discussing preventative health and wellness with patients
- Work alongside healthcare professionals and interpreters in a community health setting
This program provides valuable experience supporting individuals experiencing food insecurity and chronic nutrition-related conditions.
5 for Life Community Events
Interns will participate in women’s health screening events throughout the Wasatch Front, where they will:
- Educate community members about wellness resources and programs
- Practice public health communication and outreach
- Gain experience representing wellness initiatives in community settings
Nutrition Workshops
Interns will assist with wellness and nutrition workshops by helping with:
- Event setup and logistics
- Participant support and engagement
- Workshop coordination and promotion
These workshops provide excellent networking opportunities with nutrition and wellness professionals while helping students learn how community wellness programs are organized and delivered.
Fitness Instruction & Exercise is Medicine
Interns will:
- Teach 1–2 semester-length fitness classes
- Gain exposure to Exercise is Medicine initiatives
- Work with patients in the Skaggs Patient Wellness Center
These experiences help students connect physical activity, preventative care, and patient wellness in clinical and community environments.
