After 15 years of dedicated service as assistant dean of students for the College of Health, Shari Lindsey is retiring—and her influence will be felt for generations. At her recent retirement celebration, one thing was undeniable: Lindsey is not only respected and deeply loved by colleagues in the College of Health, but across the University of Utah.

Building Something Extraordinary

Lindsey’s career has been defined by vision, collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to students. As director of the Sorenson Legacy Foundation Center for Student Success, she transformed how the college supports its learners. Her innovative framework became a model for other colleges across campus, setting the standard for student success initiatives.

In her role as dean’s staff liaison to faculty on undergraduate issues, Lindsey worked tirelessly on petitions, policy, curriculum, and administrative matters. She oversaw graduate and undergraduate convocations, managed budgets, and partnered with university services to ensure an exceptional educational experience for College of Health students.

Lindsey is not only revered by students, but by her colleagues and fellow advisors.

“Shari didn’t just build an advising center—she built a community,” said Dave Belt, a senior academic advisor in the center. “She encouraged professional growth, supported life’s challenges, and still held high standards. That balance of compassion and accountability is rare—and it’s why her legacy will endure.”

A Leader Who Lifts Others

When we think about what makes a leader truly exceptional, it’s not just about titles—it’s about influence and heart. Lindsey cultivated a culture of mentorship and empowerment, ensuring that her team felt supported and valued.

Eric Gardner, senior advisor for Parks, Recreation and Tourism, summed it up perfectly with a baseball analogy: “If it were the bottom of the ninth inning, bases loaded, and you were down by three runs, you’d want Shari stepping up to the plate. Not only would she hit the grand slam, but she’d credit the win to everyone else on the team.”

That humility and team spirit define her leadership style. She doesn’t seek the spotlight—she shines it on others.

Champion for Students and Staff

Stories of Lindsey’s advocacy abound. Laura Gerner, academic advisor for multiple programs, shared how Lindsey took a chance on her as a recent grad with limited experience, welcoming her with open arms and endless patience. “That story isn’t unique,” Gerner said. “Shari has done this for so many. She leads by example, whether it’s advising students when schedules are packed or jumping in at events without hesitation.”

A Lasting Impact

Lindsey’s influence reaches far beyond the College of Health. The advising hub she built is now a model for other colleges across the University of Utah. Her leadership has shaped careers, improved student outcomes, and created a culture of care and excellence.

As Lindsey embarks on her next chapter, we celebrate a career that touched lives and set a standard for what leadership should look like.

Lindsey, thank you for everything. Your legacy will continue to inspire us—and we’ll be cheering you on in your next adventure.
