Students

The Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders currently has approximately 120 undergraduate students and 140 graduate students (including masters and doctoral). Our students hail from all corners of Utah, the United States, and the World.

The faculty teach and conduct research in a variety of areas in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Out of approximately 300 Speech and Hearing Science programs in the United States, The University of Utah was ranked #8 by Academic Analytics. (Academic Analytics assesses the scholarly productivity of faculty using their book and journal publications, journal article citations, federally-funded research grants, and honorific awards.)

About Admissions

Requirements for admission to our graduate programs are the same whether you are applying for admission to our Master's (MA or MS) or Doctoral (AuD or PhD) program.

If you are interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology and have not had the necessary background at the undergraduate level, please be sure that you are aware of the requirements for admission as stated for non-matriculated students.

Our clinical training programs in both Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology are accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is very active in the Department, and we encourage all students to join.

Employment Information

Jobs in both Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology are in high demand in the state of Utah and nationwide. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts 27% growth for Speech-Language Pathologists from 2018 to 2028 and 16% growth for Audiologists for the same time frame. This projected growth is much higher than most fields. 

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Speech-Language Pathologists earned an average salary of $85,820 in 2021. In 2021 the average annual earnings in the industries with the highest levels of employment in Speech-Language pathologists were:

Elementary and Secondary Schools $75,650
General Medical $91,810
Pediatric Hospital $90,000
Nursing care facilities $101,210

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Audiologists earned an average salary of $88,000 in 2021. In 2021, the average annual earnings in industries with the highest levels of employment in audiology were:

Offices of other health practitioners $83,650
Health and Personal Care Stores $80,500
General Medical and Surgical Hospitals $90,720

TOEFL Exam : Applicants whose native language is not english must also submit scores for the TOEFL Exam. a minimum score of 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based) is required on the toefl.  in addition, proficiency in oral english is required for admittance.  this requirement is typically met tough a personal or telephone interview.
