Skeletal Muscle Exercise Research Facility

About SMERF

The Skeletal Muscle Exercise Research Facility (SMERF) is focused on muscle, movement, physical function, and human performance; specifically how the neuromuscular system adapts and how these changes help or hinder human function in daily life, across the lifespan, and/or following injury or disease. The SMERF provides the equipment and expertise for the assessment of neuromuscular strength/power, endurance and balance. Aerobic and metabolic capacities are also assessed. In addition, staff are trained in physical function assessments of mobility and gait. As a component of the University's CCTS Clinical Trials Support system, services at the SMERF can be requested through the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences in the School of Medicine. https://medicine.utah.edu/ccts/
